Grandfather's Village · Case 4

Grandma's Chest

Every night a keepsake comes out of Grandma Hatice’s çeyiz, her dowry chest.

Grandma Hatice is ninety and hasn’t opened her çeyiz, her dowry chest, in sixty years. This week the chest opens every night, and something from inside is left somewhere in the village. She isn’t angry. “A keepsake shut in a chest is no keepsake,” she says. Uncle Rıza remembers her telling him stories when he was a boy.
